How things are counted
- Word count matches Word and WPS
Words = Chinese characters + Chinese punctuation + English words. Each Chinese character (rare extension characters included) and each full-width mark such as ,。!?《》 counts as one; “ ” ‘ ’ … — and · count as Chinese punctuation only next to Chinese text. Half-width punctuation, spaces and emoji are not counted as words
- Words and characters
A run of letters or digits is one English word, and so are words joined by an apostrophe or hyphen such as don't and e-mail, and numbers such as 3.14 and 1,000. Characters are counted as you see them, so 👍🏽 and 👨👩👧 are one each. Line breaks are not characters and blank lines are not paragraphs
- Reading time
Estimated at 400 Chinese characters or 230 English words per minute, adding the two for mixed text. Treat it as a rough guide
