Tips

Base64 isn’t encryption
Anyone can decode it back, so never use it to hide passwords or keys.
About a third bigger
Every 3 bytes become 4 characters. Inlining icons of a few KB in HTML or CSS is fine; larger images load faster as normal files.
When to use URL-safe
Use the URL-safe variant in query strings, file names and JWTs so + / = aren’t mistaken for special characters. Both variants can be pasted straight into the decoder.
